Urstad KH, Oyen O, et al.

Clinical Transplantation, 26(3): E246-253, 2012.

Aims
To explore whether a structured, tailored education program would increase renal transplant recipients’ level of knowledge, compliance, self-efficacy and quality of life.

Interventions
Educational intervention program comprised 5 one to one teaching sessions given by an experienced transplant nurse versus no specific educational intervention. All patients received ordinary care consisting of patient education during hospitalization.

Participants
159 kidney transplant recipients.

Outcomes
The primary outcome was recipients’ knowledge on aspect of life post-transplant. Secondary outcome included recipients’ compliance measured by number of observations logged in the diary 7-8 weeks post-transplant, self-efficacy and quality of life.

Follow-up
6 months

CET Conclusions
This is an interesting study from Norway where recipients of a renal transplant were randomised to a tailored educational programme in the first few weeks after transplantation. The tailored educational programme was provided by an experienced transplant nurse and outcomes were compared in a control group who did not receive any specific education. Evaluation at different times after transplant showed that the patients receiving the tailored educational programme had increased knowledge compared to the control group and that compliance and their own evaluation of their quality of life was superior. Although intuitively this was the result one would have expected, it is nice to see it confirmed in a well planned study.
