Comparison of harmonic scalpel versus conventional knot tying for transection of short hepatic veins at liver transplantation: prospective randomized study.
Olmez A, Karabulut K, et al.Transplantation Proceedings 2012; 44(6): 1717-1719.
Aims
To investigate the use of a harmonic scalpel in comparison to conventional ligation during transaction of the short hepatic veins of liver transplantation.
Interventions
Patients were randomized to receive either conventional ligation or harmonic scalpel.
Participants
16 elective living donor liver transplantation recipients.
Outcomes
The occurrence of bleeding from the transacted veins to the end of surgery and postoperative intra-abdominal bleeding.
Follow-up
Not reported.
CET Conclusions
This is a small study of recipient hepatectomy with preservation of the vena cava in 16 patients undergoing elective living donor liver transplantation. The results suggest that obliteration of the short hepatic veins with the harmonic scalpel was just as safe as ligation provided the veins were equal or less than two millimetres in diameter.
