Sevoflurane Versus Desflurane on the Incidence of Postreperfusion Syndrome During Living Donor Liver Transplantation: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Lee J, Yoo YJ, et al.

Transplantation 2015 [record in progress]

Aims
To compare the effect of sevoflurane and desflurane on the incidence of postreperfusion syndrome (PRS) during liver transplantation.

Interventions
Patients were randomized to receive either sevoflurane or desflurane for maintenance of general anesthesia.

Participants
62 adult liver recipients aged 18-65 years scheduled for elective living-donor liver transplantation

Outcomes
The primary outcome was the incidence of PRS. Secondary outcomes included use of vasoactive drugs, trends of laboratory results in the immediate postoperative period, and ICU and hospital length of stay.

Follow-up
End of hospital stay

CET Conclusions
In this small but carefully done trial, two volatile anaesthetics were compared in living donor liver transplantation, sevoflurane and desflurane. Evidence of the post reperfusion syndrome was a little less with sevoflurane, although this is not striking, and of course the results are only relevant to living donor liver transplantation. Further studies would be required to confirm its value in deceased donor liver transplantation.
